MEET STEPHEN
Hello! Thanks for visiting. I enjoy talking about myself as much as most people enjoy going to the dentist. However, a campaign is like a job interview, and you deserve to know who you are considering hiring.
My story begins with my family, which is deeply rooted in the Greenbrier Valley. This community raised me and my ancestors. My mom, Jane Cobb Gillespie from Ronceverte, is the daughter of Ernest & Mary Ellen Cobb. My dad, Steve Baldwin Sr. from Renick, is the son of Wilburn & Juanita Baldwin. My step-father, John Gillespie from White Sulphur Springs, is the son of Temp & Phebe Gillespie.
My wife, Kerry Richardson Baldwin, is from Florida...but marrying her was still the best decision I ever made! We met in college and celebrate our eighth anniversary in September 2015. She works as Associate Director of Event Services at The Greenbrier. Some people say she's an angel, but I say the angels are probably a lot like her. (She thinks that's a corny line. She's right, as usual, but I'm still using it.)
Growing up here, I attended Lewisburg Elementary, Eastern Greenbrier Middle, & Greenbrier East. As a senior in 2000, the faculty awarded me an honor I still proudly treasure today--Spartan Boy.
From 2000-04 , I attended Queens College in Charlotte, NC, graduating with honors and a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science. I worked in political campaigns, local media, and on campus to pay for my living expenses and gain experience.
From 2004-07, I attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, earning a Master's Degree in Divinity (which is a fancy way of saying I studied to be a minister). I worked as a hospital chaplain to gain experience and pay for living expenses.
In 2007, Ronceverte Presbyterian Church called me as their minister. Folks sometimes ask me what a minister does? I teach, preach, plan worship, lead a staff of seven, manage the property, facilitate small groups, perform weddings & funerals, direct folks in need to available resources, coordinate mission projects and workcamps, and serve as a spiritual resource to the community...when I'm not fixing leaky toilets or repairing our steam boiler! Over the past eight years, we have grown in numbers and outreach to the community thanks to a dedicated church family.
Simultaneously, I've served our state church body (The Presbytery of WV) in multiple leadership roles including being the youngest Moderator ever elected. In that role, I presided over all of our public meetings across the state and formally represented the Presbytery as needed. Locally, I serve as Treasurer of the Ronceverte Ministerial Association and oversee a benevolence fund which assists those in need.
In 2012, the voters of Greenbrier County elected me as the top vote-getter to the Board of Education where I still serve. I've taken that job very seriously and visited schools as often as they will have me to see what it's really like to teach and learn in today's school system.
My grandfather used to tell people when I was little that I would either be a minister or a politician. As usual, he was right. I'm both! That's because I view public service as ministry to the community that raised me. It's time for a new generation of leadership in southern WV to step forward and take the reigns, and that's precisely what I intend to do.
As those who work with me will tell you, no one works harder than I do. I've been called a bulldog, because I don't quit until the task is done. I've been called a mule, because you can count on me to do the heavy lifting. I've been called a lot of things, but never Delegate. If you give me that opportunity, I will work hard to serve you and your families.
That's a bit about me, but I really want to know about you. Be in touch to share your story so, together, we can build a future for this great state God has given us.
Grace & peace,
Stephen Baldwin
